Last Sunday we had hoped to go to the beach but when we woke up it was rather cloudy and dare I say a bit chilly. We decided to get some people together and go for a late lunch. Since money is tight we were looking for a place that would give us great bang for the buck or in this case peso.
We settled on Grill 2000 Churrascaria which is a nice little Brazilian restaurant on Tulum Ave. in front of the HSBC bank. We invited our good friends Hugo, Lis and their little boy Nicolas and my Mom.
Right now in Cancun there are a lot of specials on in restaurants, tours etc. since it is low season and Grill 2000 are currently offering a 50% discount on their Brazilian buffet. For 99 pesos (less than 10CDN) you can have a well stocked salad bar which features shrimp cocktail, ceviche, sides and of course salad items plus a variety of pastas and 8 different cuts of meat. The meat is grilled as you order it and brought to your table on a long spike and served on your plate. You can try turkey, chicken drumsticks, boar, beef sirloin, pork sirloin, filet mignon wrapped in bacon, chicken hearts, duck livers and a few other cuts. A LOT OF MEAT!! I don’t usually eat so much meat but we wanted to try everything out and on the whole everything was great–tender and tasty.
When we arrived at 1pm (opening time) it was fairly empty. There is an indoor area but they had their air conditioning cranked up to the highest so we decided to sit on the outside patio. By the time we left there was a lineup down the street which is always a little disconcerting as you can feel people’s hungry eyes on you willing you to finish quickly and leave.
We had a thoroughly good meal that we finished off with a Brazilian style flan. Our only complaint was that they charged my friend’s son, who is 4, 69 pesos (less than 7CDN) for his buffet meal when he only ate a slice of chicken from his Mother’s plate. We spoke with the waiter and we were given the typical Cancun shrug which means “uhh what do you want me to do about it..it is the way we do things here”. They also charged 30 pesos ( 3 CDN) for a glass of pop–(we didnt even get a can or bottle) So unfortunately though we did indeed have a good time the experience was some what soured at the end when we felt that we were being taken advantage of on the final bill–it felt like they were trying to make up for the very reasonable buffet price by hiking up other prices. So buyer beware!
I don’t want to end this post on a negative note so I will reiterate that the food was very good and I do recommend this place for a pleasant Sunday lunch with friends and family.
